Charter Captain
Operating a "Yacht for Charter" requires the additional local knowledge of Anchorages, Fuel & Water Access, Marinas, Grocery, Restaurants & Entertainment. I have experience with both Captain-only and Captain with Chef charters. I have developed working relationships with freelance chefs from the areas where I have chartered.
The US Virgin Islands
I love the protected waters of St. John. It is a snorkeling paradise and very laid back. St. Thomas has beautiful beaches and plenty of activity. My all time favorite sushi restaurant is Lotus Asian Grille in the Red Hooke area.
British Virgin Islands
They are, without a doubt, the best known place to charter a boat in the Caribbean. Chartering in the BVI is easy to plan, easy to provision, easy to get to. The fun part for me is finding a way out of the crowd while chartering here.
The Leeward Islands
St. Maarten, St. Martin, St. Bart’s, Saba & Anguilla are where I cut my teeth as Captain of Lady Angele. You can find it all here. The best restaurant experiences in the Caribbean can be found in St. Martin and St. Bart’s. My favorite snorkel and dive spots are around Saba, Prickley Pear Cays & Ile Fourchue. My Favorite day anchorage and beach is Dog Island.
Antigua is worth exploring all on its own. There are plenty of beaches to get away on. Green Island should not be missed. History is everywhere and provisioning is pretty easy. With more time on a charter it is fun to visit Montserrat for a close-up of the volcano, Nevis is very quaint & St. Kitts is great for Carnival. Barbuda is a beautiful getaway and can have some good surfing in a north swell.
In the French Islands of Guadeloupe, Ile de Saints & Marie Galante are my favorites. Even with my limited French it is wonderful to be there. Not as developed for tourism but easy to access. I have been charmed by the people and enjoy the croissants and the slow pace.
Dominica is beautiful in its interior. The people are friendly and accommodating, however, the access to shore by dinghy is limited.
The Windward Islands
St. Lucia is enchanting. I have had very good experiences chartering there. The area around the Pitons is unique for the Caribbean. St. Lucia Jazz Festival is great!
St. Vincent, Bequia and the Grenadines are wonderful "off the beaten path" sailing. The Grenadines are becoming crowded but still are worth the trip.
Grenada is awesome. I spent five months there and found it to be the friendliest of all the islands. I still have many friends there.
Maine from Camden to Bar Harbor
Maine offers beautiful sailing and gunkholing in August and early September. The quality of light is fantastic after the fog burns off. On a recent Captain & Chef charter aboard Blue Whale we were the “mother ship” for a J-100. Our guests were racing their boat from island to island. Our instructions from the guest were to serve breakfast and have a box lunch ready for the crew of 5. Then find an anchorage near enough to the start line to make the start time but remote enough to be secluded from the rest of the racers. Each night was in a different spot and our guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oevours and a gourmet dinner each night.
Newport, Cape Cod, Elizabeth Islands, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard
I have spent a great deal of time over the last 20 years in New England by both land and sea. The area is charming. Everywhere you anchor is a piece of American history. See the Article from Conde Nast Traveler about their charter with me!
New York City & Long Island Sound
The bright lights of New York City! The theater & restaurants followed by a sail past the Statue of Liberty on the way to the adventure of passing through Hell Gate. Long Island Sound offers many different harbors in which to relax or explore. The dunes and beach at Port Jefferson are beautiful and towns like Mystic and Sag Harbor have wonderful shops and small town feel. Block Island is a top spot on any sailor's list.
North Carolina Sounds and Rivers
I owned and operated East Carolina Sailing School and managed Carolina Wind Yachting Centers bareboat charter fleet. I still call North Carolina home.
The Great Lakes
Growing up in Ohio I started sailing on the Great lakes. On Lake Erie I love Cleveland for the Rock Hall of Fame and of course I am an Indians, Browns and Cavs fan. If you have not been there, the waterfront will surprise you. Kelly’s Island is quiet and the Glacial Grooves still amaze me when I see them. Put in Bay is a huge party all summer long. A hike to the top of Perry’s Monument can help to work off the excess. Cedar Point in Sandusky Bay is the best amusement park in the world. Vermilion and Huron are sleepy and quaint.
Lake Michigan gives you the Chicago skyline and summer festivals in places like Sheboygan and Manitowoc. Traverse Bay, Sleeping Bear Dunes and Mackinac Island are favorites as well.
